RiverWoods Blog: Nashua Flute Choir Concert

The Nashua Flute Choir consists of about 16 flutists playing flutes of varying size, from the little piccolo to the contra-bass.  This latter generated considerable interest after the concert, and a crowd of residents formed around the player to see it close-up and ask questions.  Just this one instrument forms an adequate ground bass  for the entire ensemble, and sounds a more like an organ pipe than a flute.  Made in the Netherlands in small numbers the price is somewhere in the range of 25K, not for every aspiring flutist!

This group has played at RiverWoods five times in recent years, and are always well received.  Flute choirs are a relatively new type of ensemble, this one was organized back in 1983 when there was very little in the way of literature for such a group.  The success of such an ensemble has encouraged composers to write for it, and there is now a larger choice in the way of pieces to perform.   Needless to say, the residents enjoyed it very much.
