History and Mission

The Mission of RiverWoods, a not-for-profit Charitable organization, is to maintain creative and secure continuing care communities that enrich the freedom of senior living while easing the challenges of aging.

Created by residents for residents.

RiverWoods at Exeter started as a dream in the early 1980’s around the dining room table of Rosemary Coffin and Maryanna Hatch. They worked with a grassroots group of like-minded seacoast residents who were interested in fostering a new way to live while growing older. Their goal was to develop an active community of interested adults who cared about each other and the world around them.

Ten years after that first conversation, after hundreds of planning sessions, budget revision and town meetings, the land and funding came together. In 1994, the first campus of RiverWoods was opened. Today, RiverWoods is a thriving, vibrant, independent community with three campuses all nestled on 200 wooded acres.

RiverWoods is nationally accredited by CCAC/CARF and has enjoyed a long history of financial strength and resident involvement.

As an independently operated life care community, RiverWoods also offers significant peace of mind, with guaranteed lifetime access to private rooms in Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing if ever needed, with no time limit and no significant increase in fee (just a small charge for two additional meals per day) and a 90% refundable contract.

The RiverWoods Story (9:14)

The Vision Lives On

RiverWoods was founded in 1984 by a small group of Seacoast area residents interested in finding a new way to grow older.  From that first dream, after much work, the first campus, The Woods, opening in 1994, followed by two additional campuses, so that, by today, there are three thriving campuses in Exeter.

The Board of Trustees of RiverWoods decided to create a new structure that would enable the organization to grow and fulfill our founder’s vision, while maintaining strong core campuses.  In 2012, The RiverWoods Group (TRWG) was formed, with RiverWoods as its first affiliate. The RiverWoods Group has a separate board and is structured to be able to accommodate other affiliates.
